HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

OUROBOROUS

I was super excited to be asked to star in “Ouroborous,” a sci-fi short written by Paul DeNigris and directed by Alex Broderick at University of Advancing Technology.  The part was written with me in mind, which was awesome, and it was heavy on green-screen and special and practical effects, which was new to me.  I played Dr. Faye O’Neill and Nancy Mercurio played the future version of the same character.

 It is currently in post-production.

KERRY AND ANGIE
“Kerry and Angie,” a short I directed in 2011, continues to play around the world!  Locally, it played at the Bloody Hero International Film Festival and Judith Eisenberg won Best Actress at that festival, the Jerome International Film and Music Festival, and at Film Bar as part of the Arizona Filmmaker Showcase.  It also played in NY at the Brooklyn Girl Film Festival and in the UK at the Thurrock International Film Festival where it was nominated for Best International Film and won the Audience Favorite!  I was lucky to travel to both the Brooklyn and Thurrock Festivals and attend in person.  It is also now playing on Shorts HD, which is available on DirectTV.  It is part of the “Shorts in Love” programming bracket.

Arizona Theatre Company’s Cafe Bohemia
TORTILLA CURTAIN
I was thrilled in March to be asked to be a part of Cafe Bohemia at Arizona Theatre Company.  Café Bohemia, a season of play readings, jams, and ideas, features diverse new works from bold and inventive playwrights.  I read the role of Kyra Menaker-Mossbacher, as well as some other small parts.  “Tortilla Curtain” was written by Matthew Spangler based on the novel by T. C. Boyle.  Katherine Monberg directed the reading.

COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT
The Courtyard by Marriott commercial I shot is still airing and I am so grateful!  The spot starts with a man (the guy in the picture) falling up an escalator in the airport.
Thank you Courtyard!

VERVE STUDIOS
I continue to own and coach at Verve Studios.  We’re in our 8th year of business and our 2nd year at the new studio location in the Scottsdale Airpark.  I am teaching ages 11-adult and love it!  www.VerveStudio.net

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

I was thrilled to be asked to teach as a Faculty Associate the Acting for Film and Television at Arizona State University this past fall.  The 300 level course is a requirement for Film Production majors.  I had a blast being on campus and am excited that I’ve been asked back for the Spring Semester.

That’s a little of what I was up to in 2013.  I wish you, your family and your company a successful, happy and prosperous 2014!

MELBY PLAYS ‘PHYLLIS’ IN ‘BODY AWARENESS’ AT ACTORS THEATRE OF PHOENIX

BODY AWARENESS
by Annie Baker

Mar 30 – Apr 15, 2012
Herberger Theater Center
(Stage West)

Amanda Melby plays “Phyllis” in “Body Awareness” at Actors Theatre of Phoenix; opens March 30

The one-act play is set (as last season’s CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION) in the fictional small town of Shirley, Vermont, where Phyllis (AMANDA MELBY), a college campus organizer for Body Awareness Week (whose topics range from a dance troupe of refugee Palestinian children to an eating disorder seminar) lives with her partner Joyce (Maria Amorocho), a high school social studies teacher, and Joyce’s 21-year-old son Jared (Will Hightower), from a prior marriage. Jared shows several symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome, but he refuses to see a therapist for treatment. Their houseguest is a middle-aged photographer named Frank Bonitatibus (Ian Christianson), whose artistic photos of nude women offend Phyllis. Frank’s presence exacerbates the already existing tension between the three of them, and when Joyce agrees to pose for one of Frank’s pictures, this threatens her relationship with Phyllis. Meanwhile, Jared, a self-described autodidact who works at McDonald’s until he successfully tries to get fired because he hates his co-workers, asks Frank for advice on how to attract women.

“5 STARS!…a smart, modest work about ordinary, flawed people, grasping for connection, but none of it feels small, thanks to Baker’s sharp ear for the deeply painful-and funny-longings squirming under her characters’ dialogue. What a beautiful start to a young playwright’s theatrical body of work.” – Time Out New York

Directed by Matthew Wiener.
